It is a well-known and accepted practice of propane gas professionals to perform a leak test on all new propane installations and when an interruption of gas flow has occurred to your home, business, camper, or RV. However, to ensure the continued safety of existing propane installations, the importance of performing a leak test during all interruptions of service cannot be over-emphasized.
An interruption of service is any time that there is not enough pressure for the appliances to operate. An interruption of service can be when regulators are changed, a tank is changed out, an “out of gas” situation, or any time the tank valve is turned off.
Soundside Gas Services LLC is required to perform a leak check if OUR service technician CONNECTS a tank to your home, business, RV, or camper gas system. This is an extra charge to ensure your safety. However, you as the customer have the option to perform the connection yourself. Soundside Gas Services, LLC will not be liable for any damages resulting from a customer connected installation.
The National Fuel Gas Code [NFPA 54] is an excellent source for information on this subject. The text below is reprinted from the 2020 edition and spells out the leak testing requirements. Follow these rules, and always check with the local authority having jurisdiction for other requirements.
6.17 Leak Check for Vapor Systems.
6.17.1 All vapor piping systems operating at 20 psig (138 kPag) or less in stationary installations shall be checked for leakage in accordance with 6.17.2 through 6.17.5.
6.17.2 Immediately after the gas is turned on into a new system or into a system that has been initially restored after an interruption of service, the piping system shall be checked for leakage.
6.17.3 Piping within the scope of NFPA 54 shall be checked for leakage in accordance with that code.
6.17.4 Gas systems within the scope of 49 CFR 192 or those outside the scope of NFPA 54 shall be exempt from the requirements of this section.
6.17.5 Where leakage is indicated, the gas supply shall be shut off until the necessary repairs have been made.
